A New Day for Urban Agriculture in San Diego

JANUARY 31, 2012 BEGAN A NEW DAY FOR URBAN AGRICULTURE IN SAN DIEGO

SAN DIEGO — On Tuesday, the San Diego City Council voted unanimously to allow chickens, bees and goats as backyard pets, making San Diego the latest of many cities nationwide to pass laws promoting urban agriculture.

90 Supporters turned out for the vote on Urban Agriculture, January 31 at the San Diego City Council. The Council voted all in favor of the moves that will allow for pygmy goats, chickens, bees, and possibly…new kinds of relationships with flying insects that can come from animals and growing of organic food in the urban setting.

January 31 was a new day for Urban Agriculture in San Diego. Our City Council and Sustainability Leaders of San Diego joined together to celebrate down at the Council Chambers. I was one of the last speakers. I felt very emotional, knowing that this will be a turn around moment for The Vanishing of the Bees, as well as providing a new sound foundation for true economic prosperity that can only begin from the ground up.

The arrival of Urban Agriculture is a national agenda, and the local move was inspired by grants from the federal government who know, in part, in spite of being in the farm bed with large GMO Biotech Ag, that the future will be organic.

During World War 2, close to 40% of our foods came from the local gardens. This is inspired what was called the Victory Garden. We simply had to learn to grow our own food.

Today we in San Diego have another burgeoning Victory Garden Movement, The presence of more baby pygmy goats, chickens, and bees is not going to come without a massive amount of new reeducation and more and more single family renters and landowners discover that truly it is possible to have farm animals, and happy bees living among us.

IT SEEMS APPROPRIATE ON THIS DAY TWO DAYS AFTER THE BIG VOTE, TO BE WELCOMING THE NO FLY ZONE TT IN OUR ENCHANTED GARDEN KITCHEN FOR TESTING

Mixing Urban Agriculture with city living may bring up a concern that we will have more flying bugs. This is a concern in Carmel Valley, where a gnat problem was identified. This has caused a close look at one of our favorite and most longstanding farms, Be Wise. I wrote about this a few months ago. Neighbors were up in arms. Here is one story from November 9, 2011.

Gnat problem swarms around supervisors

“Organic farmers need to be good neighbors and not create crippling eye gnat infestations,” she said. “We must find a way for the organic farmers in Jacumba and … Escondido to reduce the eye gnat population to a level that does not adversely affect the people who live in the surrounding communities.” If that’s not possible, Jacob said, the county needs some new regulations that would allow it to shut down the farms if the problem grows out of control.

The opinions of the public speakers at Wednesday’s meeting were split. Many told woeful tales of gnats destroying their enjoyment of the outdoors and even of bringing the value of their homes and property down because no one wants to live in a gnat-plagued area.

THE NO FLY ZONE TT IS ON THE SCENE

According to Tony Tracy, Flying insects have been a problem for hotels, bars, and taverns where foods are tasted. The No Fly Zone TT is a totally green solution. It uses mother nature to manage the fruit fly and other flying insect problems without the need to use harsh chemicals. It is clear to me that Urban Agriculture is a trend, and with it may come the need for new solutions.

The No FlyZoneTT uses the oils of plants, including vegetables and fruits, to make our totally green nectar for cleaning products. There is nothing toxic about our nectar. Our aim is to be totally green company with our solutions.”

BREAKTHROUGH FOR WINE TASTING ROOMS

The NoFlyZone TT is already being seen as a major breakthrough among Northern California Wineries where managing Fruit flies in wine tasting rooms and around vats has been a problem, Tony tells me.

WINERIES HAVE FLYING BUG ISSUES

When visiting a winery during harvest, there a couple of things to watch for—a complete lack of fruit flies in a tasting room that is near the cellar or crushpad probably means the winery is employing chemical bombs at night.

Pesky and annoying, fruit flies have a reputation of appearing at the kitchen table fruit bowl and produce section of the local grocery store – especially during the summertime. Attracted to much more than the sweet smell of fresh peaches and browning bananas, fruit flies show no mercy and will attack food processing plants, warehouses, wineries, and restaurants. To rid your home of this uninvited guest, consider using home remedies for fruit flies to solve your problem.

FRUIT FLIES ARE A SOURCE OF CONTAMINATED OF FOODS

Fruit Flies, Drosophila sp.

Habitat : Fruit flies are of concern both as nuisance pests and as serious contaminators of food. Large populations of these flies can very quickly buildup in restaurants, hotels, cafeterias, and similar food service establishments. Structures or areas in the vicinity of orchards, vineyards, truck crop acreages, etc., are frequently invaded. The ability of the adults to appear from “nowhere” when fruits are exposed and the fact that they seem to be “everywhere” are sources of amazement for most homeowners and individuals in the food industry. Food processing plants, including wineries, pickle plants, dehydrators, and canneries (especially tomato canneries), consider fruit flies to be a greater menace than any other insect pest. These flies cause a high percentage of the insect contamination of fruit and fruit products. Fruit flies are frequently cited as the contaminating agent in reports of food seizures made by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration.
