With God’s Grace and Creativity, I will capture enough of it for a future lovely fence, and 102 other uses to invest in the future of restoring the American Economy. Arundo, by the way, has one of the greatest potentials for replacing Oil for Gasoline that we know, but we would rather make $63.00 a ton at the Landfill calling it trash, and then spend bucks on Roundup Herbicide to attempt to eradicate this plant that will simply not go away.

A DEDICATION TO THIS SERIES OF PLANT YOUR DREAM BLOGS ON THE OVERGROWTH CLEANUP ALONG THE AROSA CANYON RIM

This Plant Your Dream Blog series on the Overgrowth Cleanup along the Arosa Canyon Rim began in Summer in warm weather. Now it is very cold in my room and Winter is outside. This series is dedicated to Henry David Thoreau. In his book Walden, he speaks about The Artist of Kouroo. Here is a quote: “There was an artist in the city of Kouroo who was disposed to strive after perfection. One day it came into his mind to make a staff. Having considered that in an imperfect work time is an ingredient, but into a perfect work time does not enter, he said to himself, It shall be perfect in all respects, though I should do nothing else in my life.”

This quote informs events along the Arosa Canyon, where likely, on December 15, 2011, my neighbors, weather permitting, will be attempting to conquer a bunch of Giant Reeds called Arundo Donax, that have been their consternation for weeks. In the name of complying with codes now set by our well meaning San Diego Fire Prevention Bureau, who knows Arundo as an invasive weed and fire hazard, our landscape here on the Rim of the Arosa Canyon will soon be devoid of Arundo by means of further Roundup Herbicide. We are out to kill a reed that may have provided the basket that held Moses safe down the Nile; That wrapped Kings of Egypt in their tombs; The kings knew this plant could not be killed and would carry them back to life. We imagine today we can beat nature with Roundup, but nature always wins and we end up paying a bigger price.

These events have absorbed me for months. We have spent more than $1800.00 on our own Overgrowth Cleanup including cleanup up of brush belonging to neighbors along the Arosa Canyon Rim. I have a sense something good will come of all this. Maybe a learning about slowing down a bit in our approach to environmental problem solving. There is still much to learn, and like the Artist of Kouroo, I am taking time here on the Plant Your Dream Blogs to record it.

The landscape may shift soon here. I do not believe the teachings from The Arundo Tribe will soon be forgotten. My spiritual father, Dr. Bernard Jensen, tells a story of two surgeons in a very important heart operation that involved a very extensive procedure. One heart surgeon takes a deep breath and closes his eyes. He says to the other, “we must take time, we haven’t a moment to lose.” Something in that message is in my heart right now, as we approach a day of surgery for the Arosa Canyon.

BILL HARRIS, STORM WATER RUNOFF EDUCATOR FOR SAN DIEGO, SAID HE WILL HELP COME UP WITH THE LOWEST IMPACTFUL ENVIRONMENTAL SOLUTION FOR THE AROSA CANYON IN THIS VIDEO

YOUTUBE NOTES NOVEMBER 19, 2011

Leslie Goldman, AKA Your Enchanted Gardener, popular internet Plant Your Dream Blogger, speaks to Bill Harris, public information educator for Think Blue, the San DIego exciting project to raise awareness about how our water goes to the sea when we release pollutants down our storm drains and waterways. What is the best possible management practice for our enormous stand of Arundo Donax (Giant Reed) on the rim of the Arosa Canyon near San Diego State University? To kill or not kill it with Roundup Herbicide, initiated this interview with Bill Harris at the El Cerrito Community Council meeting of November 17, 2011. Bill is a lively speaker, a gift to San Diego. Even though this is private land, I see the need for the CIty to step in an help us come up with solutions for our Arundo Donax. Neigbors are under pressure to complain with deadlines and they can feel they need to take action–that may mean using Roundup herbicide that is considered legal now. Bill Harris cares about the future of our kids. Will they be able to enjoy going in the water of our ocean with parents having to be concerned about dangerous runoff from chemicals and other harmful substances? Are we helping the situation by resorting to using Roundup Herbicide in Arosa Canyon, increasingly identified as toxic to human, animal, and vegetable health? Roundup is a popular way kill off backyard weeds, yet Black Plastic, as suggested by the Center for Social and Ecological Stewardship will also work. What is the message from the Arosa Canyon Arundo Donax itself? What is the voice of our Arosa Canyon saying to you wherever you live? This is a story about Arosa Canyon, a story of well meaning Fire Prevention staff and community neighbors coming together. What will a bright green future for Arosa Canyon look like? What are the most advanced approaches in harmony with nature? Arundo Donax is speaking now and says: Let us grow together, man, woman, and plant. I, Arundo Donax, am not a devil plant. I am here to help you live in harmony with the beat of nature. I am here to help you get your beat back with nature.–

1,000,000 MORE NEW GARDENERS

Dear Uncle Leslie,

I really enjoyed your presentation yesterday. It uplifted my spirits and made me feel like I had to do something to make our planet better. Personally, I don’t eat vegetables but everything you said changed my mind about it. I do need to change my eating habits and I do need to grow my own vegetables. You kept the classes’ attention. You were funny, and you kept us interested. You’ll probable be the man that’ll actually get our generation to do their part in helping rebuild our enchanted garden.

Sincerely,
Summer, 15 or 16 year old, Ms Eva Becker’s Science Class, Hamilton High School, Los Angeles, October 5, 2011

OUTLAWING ROUNDUP HERBICIDE

This new petition campaign was inspired by my Arosa Canyon Rim neighbor Dave Cammall who underscored for me on November 19, my 64th birthday that until Roundup Herbicide is outlawed, many people who imagine it is safe to use. A Hazarous Waste manager for the City of San Diego, Dave pointed out that Agent Orange was once legal, but now it is outlawed. May the same future for Roundup Herbicide be soon forthcoming through our actions here that begin on the Arosa Canyon rim.

SIGN THE PETITION NOW TO OUTLAW ROUNDUP HERBICIDE USE

WEED CONTROL PANACEA OR HUMAN RIGHT VIOLATOR?

Please express your opinion by signing the petition to outlaw Roundup Herbicide. Do you believe Roundup Herbicide is safe? Most people do. Take a look at The World According to Monsanto and this story about The Big Six chemical companies being found guilty of Human Rights Violations on Mother Earth Earth Heals Blog by Liora Leah.

JOIN THE DISCUSSION

The Dialogue on Science, Ethics, and Food on Facebook was inspired by a meeting with Dr. Robert Fraley, one of the the lead contributors to Roundup Ready Technology, to help ease the tension between GMO and Organic Lovers. I see this tension being eased through putting the facts on the table and then allowing more and more person to get in the discussion about the benefits or harm of Roundup, or both. Please express your opinion on why you value Roundup Herbicide or feel it needs to be outlawed.

DID YOU KNOW, ACCORDING TO SCOTT MIRACLE GRO?

Take a look at the Scott Miracle Gro Site says Roundup Herbicide is safe after it dries.

Scott Miracle Gro Says:

You can plant all ornamentals, trees and shrubs the NEXT day and plant all fruits, vegetables, herbs and lawn grasses after 3 days of applying
the following products:
• Roundup® Weed & Grass Killer Ready-To-Use Plus • Roundup® Weed & Grass Killer Concentrate Plus • Roundup® Weed & Grass Killer Super Concentrate

DID YOU KNOW ACCORDING TO THE PESTICIDE ACTION NETWORK?

Glyphosate, RoundUp’s active ingredient, was found in every stream studied and in most air samples taken in a recent study conducted by government researchers in Mississippi and Iowa. And it’s undoubtedly in other states too. Across the U.S. it’s used commonly on corn, soybeans, cotton and rice, to the tune of 180-185 millions of pounds in 2007 — more tonnage than any other pesticide.

And that’s only use on farms. RoundUp is also the second most commonly used pesticide in homes and gardens across the country.

Scientists bust Monsanto’s safety myth
Glyphosate has recently been linked to birth defects,* and at extremely low levels it can kill placental cells and disrupt the human hormone system. Yet regulatory authorities still only formally recognize its potential to contaminate groundwater.

Glyphosate has recently been linked to birth defects,* and at extremely low levels it can kill placental cells and disrupt the human hormone system. Yet regulatory authorities still only formally recognize its potential to contaminate groundwater.

SafeLawns recently pointed out that while glyphosate is not listed by EPA as highly toxic when inhaled, it may become highly toxic in the human digestive system where it is metabolized to N-nitrosoglyphosate — a chemical known to cause tumors.

It can be expensive to test for pesticides in air and water, which is why we haven’t before seen the kind of data recently collected in Mississipi and Iowa. Independent testing for health effects can also be costly. Yet these are precisely the kind of data that should be required for continued use of any product. Are we exposed? Does it harm us? How does it affect children’s health and development?

That the use of “Round-up” and various other chemical concoctions should be made illegal is a no-brainer! I was a resident in a so-called town of envionmentally concerned community of Sedona Arizona. There are people who are getting sick here and not knowing why, only to wake up one day and see a large truck spraying herbicides up and down 89A. The spray was flowing a good 8 feet in the air at 5:30 in the morning, just before sun up when people were still asleep. Encountering the fellow driving the tanker was a simple issue as I was caught right in his spray, and today I have the “cold-flulike’ symptoms-coughing weezing and chest congestion because of the exposure. To put it mildly they should stop! But even writing the EPA Environmental Protection Agency (National and Local) has caused little if any impact! I had a friend that dropped in the hospital the same day with the same conditions only a shut-down of his breathing causing him to go to the emergency room- another who complained of feeling parched and dry, coughing and weezing (what kind of ‘cold’?) No-Same day, same issue- An action group has complained for years about the rampant use of Round-up out here to the city but without any good response. They still spray and spray! Another issue is the dry cleaning of the roads here with open bushes which put a 30 foot wall of dust in the air (which includes all the road debris- one can guess whats in that!) It is misery to many here but the city, despite many-many calls does nothing for Sedona (rather putting it aside as “those crazy environmentalists’. Now the conditions should be checked! Round-Up and other brain toxins are insidious chemicals to be putting in our atmosphere, but getting people to listen is another story altogether!
