Dr. Harvey W. Wiley M.D., His Work Continues
FROM THE TREATMENT OF THE SCREEN PLAY, “THE CRUSADING CHEMIST” ABOUT DR. HARVEY W. WILEY MD BY AMANDA READ
Return to the Waldorf-Astoria Dining Room in 1926. Harvey Wiley’s speech is ending.
“If the Bureau of Chemistry had been permitted to enforce the law as it was written and as it tried to do, what would have been the condition now?”
At the back of the room, Walter Williams, remorseful, turns away from the Reporter and leaves.
“The health of our people would be vastly improved and their life greatly extended…” Harvey continues. The indomitable Harvey’s battle has not ended, but the battleground has changed. He bears his frustration with the understanding and warning that neither industry nor government nor science can save a nation. It is the family that must preserve health, strength and values for the future generations.
Now his conviction is understood. Foreseeing the demise of the nation’s health, he continues to write voraciously. Among his many writings is his story of the Pure Food Law in which he portrays one of the elements in history that contributes to the mystery of how the most blessed nation in the world has unnecessarily suffered under its own indulged weakness. Harvey Wiley closes his book with the compassionate hope that one day its audience will remember its responsibility and be moved to action.
A History of a Crime Against the Pure Food Law
The Autobiography of Dr. Harvey W. Wiley M.D.
His vision would become the FDA. He had something else in mind that what the FDA and aspects of the USDA have become. When we see acts of disregard for our nation’s health today, and acts that indicate that Special Interests are have their way in Washington and making rules that do not serve the Public Good, are watching acts that have a history going back 100 years to the time when Dr. Harvey W. Wiley M.D. stepped down from government service.
Dr. Harvey W. Wiley M.D., in this book that was written 20 years after he stepped down from what would become the FDA, led a fight through Congress of a bill that passed that aimed to protect Public Health. It was called the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906. Its enforcement was blocked by Special Interests.
His book, that we can view online here thanks to Selene River Press, was consciously taken from libraries that it might be lost from view.
Today, we are living in the result of what he saw, a nation whose health is bankrupt, and whose people have deeply lost the beat with nature. This lost of clear ability to make wise natural decisions I trace to poor nutrition.
Today the Soul and the Soil are disconnected, and science is guiding a future that does not resemble the world nature had in mind.
Great wars have been fought out of this tragedy, and yet, today we have the opportunity to take one step toward a Peaceful Mind through making sure the People of California are property informed by an opportunity at hand: To help pass the California Right to Know Prop 37 Ballot Initiative on November 6, 2012 would be one important step forward toward Winning Back Our Sacred Seeds.

Summary: Dr. Wiley was the “father” of the famous Pure Food and Drug Law of 1906 and the first head of what would later become the FDA. The Lee Foundation republished his autobiography after the original manuscript was “lost” by the Macmillan Publishing Company and after the book had conspicuously disappeared from every library in the nation. In it, Wiley sets the historical record straight as to how the food industry corrupted the nation’s laws and politicians in order to sell cheap, refined, adulterated, devitalized “foods.” The industry’s usurpation of federal laws and regulations regarding whole foods is an example of American politics at its worst. Original publication date 1929; republished by the Lee Foundation in 1955.
This is the 100 Anniversary of Dr. Wiley Leaving the FDA After Helping pass The Pure Food Law in 1906. Dr. Wiley left the FDA in 1912. He was unable to get enforcement of the Pure Food Law of 1906 that had been passed by Congress. It’s enforcement was blocked by Special Interests who had their way with its enforcement. The story is told in his autobiography “Crimes Against the Pure Food Law.” The book was basically stolen from libraries, and kept out of public view.
The book was reproduced by Dr.Royal Lee in 1955, and appears on the Archives of the Selene River Press here.
NOW IS THE TIME FOR EACH of OUR ‘SACRED SEEDS’ TO COME OUT OF THE PACKAGE AND FOR EACH OF US TO COME OUT OF THE BOX. UNCLE SAM IS ASKING THIS OF US NOW
This Cartoon appeared after Dr. Wiley stepped down from Government service in 1912. He helped pass a Pure Food Law in 1906 but could not enforce it. Commercial interests, Alfred W. McCann writes in “Starving America” and “The Science of Eating” (1919) prevailed. McCann, as well as Luther Burbank, 1906, saw an important need to stand up for our children. McCann said in his books that it would take a long while for Congress to grapple with the facts that he espoused about violated grains and adulterated foods. Now is the time, 100 years later to take up the the cause once more for Pure Food.
UNCLE SAM IS CURRENTLY MARRIED TO GMO FOODS
Uncle Sam, and Washington, in spite of a few organic tremors in the White House Garden, 100 years after Dr. Harvey W. Wiley, is clearly married to GMO Foods. The FDA, that he inspired, sees no need to allow the people The Right to Know and sees it of no economic benefit to Label GMOs. A different direction is now coming. Near 50 Nations give their people the Right to Know. Uncle Sam Marries “Anti” GMO is in the wind if we are to Survive This Day, and Thrive. The first step can be the passage of a purely Consumer Rights Issue, The Right to Know what is in our Food, Label GMO’s Prop 37 on the California Ballot November 6.

These famous “poison squad” studies drew national attention to the need for a federal food and drug law. Wiley soon became a crusader and coalition builder in support of national food and drug regulation which earned him the title of “Father of the Pure Food and Drugs Act” when it became law in 1906. Wiley authored two editions of Foods and Their Adulteration (1907 and 1911), which detailed for a broad audience the history, preparation and subsequent adulteration of basic foodstuffs. He was also a founding father of the Association of Official Analytic Chemists, and left a legacy to the American pure food movement as its “crusading chemist” that was both broad and substantial.–Notes from Arlington Cemetery Net.
