Label GMOs Ballot Petition is at Hillcrest Farmers’ Market Week #1 Feb 19

LABEL GMOs NEWS FROM THE HILLCREST FARMERS’ MARKET FEBRUARY 19, 2012

My friend Nadine gets the lowdown on the opportunity to be one of 850,000 Signers for the California Ballot Initiative to Label GMOs. I got tips on how to register votes from James Mattioda, of the Arcana Apothacary . James, who took this photo, made sure I knew what to tell people when signing the petition. “Are you a registered voter?” is an important question. Only signatures from registered voters will count. To be registered means you get a ballot at the address where you sign the petition.

There will be ten weeks, between February 15 and April 22, 2012 to gather signatures to get the Label GMO iniative on the ballot. I read the bill for the first time February 21, 2012, and was shocked to find the wording does not go as far as I had hoped.

JAMES MATTIODA CAME DOWN AND BROUGHT SOME PETITIONS FOR FOLKS TO SIGN

James Mattioda, in charge of the area from Del Mar South, came to the HIllcrest Farmers’ Market Feb 19. I introduced him to a number of the people I knew. He had fun and will be back next Sunday. If you want to sign the petition, the Hillcrest Farmers’ Market will be one place you can do that, Sunday February 26, 2012

LABEL GENETICALLY ENGINEERED FOODS

This is what you are signing:

Summary of estimate by Legislative analyst and Director of Finance of fiscal impact on state and local government: Potential increase in state administrative costs of up to one million dollars annually to monitor compliance with the disclosure requirements specified in the measure. Unknown, but potentially significant, costs for the courts, the Attorney General, and district attorneys due to litigation resulting from possible violations to the provisions of this measure.

THIS CA BALLOT MEASURE IS A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION

This movement is a baby step toward getting genetically engineered foods out of our food supply. It will at least give us back the word Natural. You will not be able to call a food natural if it has made by genetic engineering. It will however, allow natural foods to contain genetically engineered ingredients.

This ballot measure allows foods to be exempted that are processed with or contain a small amount of genetically engineered ingredients. These do not have to be labeled.

GMOs ARE DANGEROUS. WE HAVE A RIGHT TO KNOW WHAT IS IN OUR FOOD.

GMOs are Dangerous; We have a Right to Know. The CA Ballot initiative does not go far enough to label GMOs, but enough foods will be labeled so that the conversation about the dangers of GMOs will be begin. The best outcome I see is that people will buy more organic food. Organic Food, for the most part, is GMO Free. The Measure also prohibits Genetically Engineered foods from being labeled as natural foods. Much of our food supply is currently in a state of Food Emergency.

ORGANIC UPRISING 2012

What do we need right now? It is an Organic Uprising. Each of us being an Organic Uprising. We need a lifestyle Shift. By
this I mean we need to get our beat with nature back. This comes as we grow some of our own food.

Prince Charles in this article 2008, states my position:

In the interview the Prince, who has an organic farm on his Highgrove estate, held out the hope of the British agricultural system encouraging more and more family run co-operative farms. When challenged over whether he was trying to turn back the clock, he said: “I think not. I’m terribly sorry. It’s not going backwards. It is actually recognising that we are with nature, not against it. We have gone working against nature for too long.”

HUFFINGTON POST ARTICLE
ON CA BALLOT MEASURE

Who came on board with the CA initiative?

Who came on board next to help?

The Organic Consumers Association (www.OCA.com) came on board. Ronnie Cummins, Alexis Baden-Mayer and the rest of the team were right there from the beginning and have continued to be a driving force for truth telling in the organic industry and keeping the grassroots strong. I admire them immensely. Jeffrey Smith and the Institute for Responsible Technology www.responsibletechnology.org) helped out at a crucial point in our grassroots building. Because they were willing to put out the word to their members to help me get meetings in communities, labelgmos.org (www.labelgmos.org), the original grassroots effort, grew exponentially in a very short time.

WHO HELPED WRITE IT?
WHO BACKED IT?

David Bronner, of Dr. Bronner’s Magical Soaps (Http://www.drbronner.com) decided to get involved. His passion and commitment just blows me away. He is the reason large companies and the various NGO’s finally decided to give this a second look. Without him, this initiative would not be where it is today. Because of him, the Center For Food Safety (Http://www.centerforfoodsafety.org) became involved in writing the initiative. The folks who wrote the actual law did an incredible job. Food Democracy Now (Fooddemocracynow.org) brought its expertise in grassroots support of farmers.

WITHOUT LABELS WE ARE IN THE DARK ABOUT WHAT WE EAT

This is a strong article:
What can be the benefit of the CA ballot initiative?

Labeling would cause an inevitable tide of curiosity among less-informed, well-meaning eaters. Not only would labels infuse shopper’s everyday environments with language about genetic engineering (think about the labeling of high-fructose corn syrup, for instance), but it might also make more people aware that they’re eating the product of an industrialized food chain.

DR BRONNER’S MAGIC SOAPBOX NEWS

The Bronner Family has contributed $1 Million to help put the CA Label GMOs Petition on the Ballot. Monsanto Corp plans to spend millions to defeat the measure as the Multi-National Corp faces off with Californian’s insist they have a Right to Know if their foods are Genetically Engineered. Dr. Mercola, who gave $500,000 to help the campaign was slammed by a Sacramento Bee Reporter. Hundreds made comments. I love The Bronner Magic Soaps. I use the Peppermint. Hope you support this wonderful company.
