Kelly Shea is one of my favorite GMO Labeling Advocates

I AM TAKING TIME NOW TO SAY THANKS

I am taking time to say thanks. I want to begin looking ahead to the Natural Product Expo West, March 7-11, 2012 at the Anaheim Convention Center. it is impossible for me to think of this show and all that has happened to me without giving thanks to Kelly Shea of White Wave and Horizon Organic, and to so many of my sponsors that came through for me in 2011.

HORIZON ORGANICS WAS A GREAT FRIEND IN 2011

At last year’s Cultivating Food Justice Event in City Heights, I did an interview about Horizon Organics and mentioned the foods that they gave me to share with kids and at the event. I passed along the cheese to kids. They had never tasted such good cheese. We live in a world where it is easy to point fingers, a world where we can point out the how others are failing to living up to the standards that we imagine for ourselves; yet everything works for the good. We are all in this world together, each doing our part to make a more beautiful world.

I am in gratitude that I have the freedom to write, and help our city of San Diego and my world look a bit more healthier,
and I thank you and my sponsors now for giving more the time to do so.

ONE OF MY FAVORITE GMO LABELING ADVOCATES IS KELLY SHEA
OF WHITE WAVE

Kelly has been instrumental of my work and the work of top GMO Labeling advocate Jeffrey Smith.

This is a photo of GMO Labeling advocate and Organic Maven Kelly Shea of White Wave and Horizon Organic with Leslie Goldman, Your Enchanted Gardener in Baltimore at the Organic Trade Association Gala. Kelly is featured in the Video below at the bottom of this blog. She is a lifelong advocate for GMO labeling and bringing in the next generation of organic farmers. She works with youth. In her role as VP of Organic stewardship for Horizon Organics, she is able to help many national voices in organic agriculture and serve as a monumental bridge builder for those in industry just getting into understanding her love for organics. She has helped White Wave join the Non GMO project. It was through Kelly’s support that my highly successful East Coast Tour was made possible.

KELLY SHEA IN HER OWN WORDS FOLLOWING THE ORGANIC SUMMIT OF SEPTEMBER 20. 2011

Organic farming offers young farmers of all ages a great alternative to conventional, chemicals-based GMO agriculture. It’s a great story about the fast growing world of value added agriculture, something that’s relatively new and growing fast. I left our session feeling confident and excited about the next generation of organic farmers, and the opportunities in front of them.

FYI, The beautiful woman who says, see you on the march is Kelly Shea of White Wave and Horizon Organic. She is an organic hero of mine and has been in favor of GMO labeling during in long career of service. She is on the OTA board and serves well. Many in the industry have been influenced to go organic because of Kelly Shea, a monumental servant of the good in our world.

KELLY SHEA AND JEFFREY SMITH, GMO LABELING ADVOCATES AT THE NATURAL PRODUCT EXPO WEST 2010

Kelly was at the Jeffrey Smith workshop at Natural Product Expo West 2011. This Natural Product Expo West took a big stand on facing the Political Challenge to GMOs. Kelly Shea, at the Jeffrey Smith workshop, wascalling upon the audience to support his work and spoke of how she had been able to help sponsor him to come to speak at White Wave. Kelly was the dominant force is getting me to the Natural Product Expo East in September 2011. During that trip I claimed by national voice in agriculture. I spoke before the USDA Listening Day September 20. I thank Kelly for making this trip possible. I look forward to seeing Kelly again soon.

Kelly Shea Supports Non GMO advocate Jeffrey Smith [HD]
by Leslie Goldman (videos)

Kelly Shea, one of the organic advocates who has given a life of service to the organic agenda, is demeaned in the documentary Organic Lies. Watch a video here as Kelly in her own words recorded March 11, 2011,calls for support for Jeffrey Smith, one of our lead GMO labeling Advocates. Slow Down, Team. OTA and its board are not the target to get GE labeling done. Spread this.

COMMENT WITH VIDEO I POSTED ON FACEBOOK
JUNE 6, 2011

Kelly Shea, VP for Government and Industry Relations and Organic Stewardship for White Wave, is clearly a fervent supporter of the Non GMO as well as Organic Agenda as expressed in the footage recorded at the Jeffrey Smith Session at the Natural Product Expo West March 11, 2011. Jeffrey Smith, author of Seeds of Deception, is one of our frontline and most successful heroes in the fight to have GE Foods labeled. Kelly Shea is one of his advocates. In this video she is asking others in the room of organic stakeholders to help Jeffrey Smith and addresses support he has received from White Wave/Horizon Organic. Many of the organic companies, including Horizon Organic are owned by larger companies with other agendas. The way we will transform the large companies is through the bridge building skills of pioneer organic leaders such as Kelly Shea who know how to befriend business leaders and legislators we want to win over to the organic side. As a member of the board of the Organic Trade Association (OTA), Kelly Shea is one of our finest assets to our organic movement. It is not uncommon for VP’s to hold stock and be given stock in the larger umbrellas that own these subsidiaries. This does not reflect a conflict of interest. OTA has advanced the organic agenda and worked against GMO proliferation. We do disservice to the organic movement and the cause of ending GMO proliferation by slamming our own leaders working round the clock in our behalf. If we want to get rid of GMO’s and see them labeled, something that I see as inevitable, support the organizations working for us. This is my morning take on the Plant Your Dream Blog. All together now, from Organic Stakeholders to Grassroots Activists. I live in both camps. Together we can claim the Tipping point now through collaboration and good will. Get in the garden and get back your own beat with nature. Grow some of your own food, even a beet in a pot. Grow some organic alfalfa seeds. In growing some of our own food, we become one with nature’s original technology and we can make better decisions about how to achieve our purposes and goals. I stand with all of who want to live in a more beautiful world. That world comes to us through collaboration and working together.

I welcome one and all points of view to enter into a Dialogue on Science, Ethics, and Food.

ON SEPTEMBER 20, THE USDA HELD AN ORGANIC LISTENING SESSION.
I WAS THERE.

Mark Lipson, Organic & Sustainable Agriculture Policy Advisor, did a great job organizing the day.
There is an organic section within the USDA addressing the needs of Organic Trade and the Organic Community.
Mark will soon post the comments received.

Mark can be reached at:
2011OrganicListening@ams.usda.gov | (202) 720-4256

The Organic sector working within the USDA asked to hear from us so they could prioritize their time and spending. This is what they wanted to know:

ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF MY TRIP WAS CONNECTING WITH MARK LIPSON

Mark is the Organic & Sustainable Agriculture Policy Advisor. He organized the days event and scheduled those who wanted to speak September 20 for the Organic Listening Session. As part of my brief talk, I volunteered to be the Organic Gardener for the People’s Organic Garden Project. My comments were video taped. Mark wrote on a piece on the program note:

THE KELLY SHEA I KNOW

KELLY SHEA HELPED LAUNCH ORGANIC UPRISING AT NPEW 2011

I AM REGROUPING.
TODAY IS FEBRUARY 1, 2012

Today is February 1, 2012. I am regrouping. For the last three or four months, my hands have been full at home. We received an Overgrowth Cleanup Notice from the Fire Prevention Bureau sometime last September. This was in the form of letters that precipitated the need for contact and friend making with neighbors around the rim of the Arosa Canyon here in San Diego and with our City Policies regarding plants allowed in our canyon and those considered invasives and fire hazards.

ARUNDO DONAX, FRIEND OR FOE?

CLEARING ARUNDO ONLY TOOK TWENTY MINUTES

How long would it take to manage Arundo Donax Resprouts? On December 15, 2012, the hillside along the Arosa Canyon Rim bordering our 1/3 acre was cleared of Around Donax. On January 9, 2012, Andrew Blume and I spent about twenty minutes clearing the resprouts. They snapped off easily. This was one of many ongoing experiments that showed if managed and monitored, Arundo Donax resprouts could be managed.

This journey to come to being friends with Arundo Donax has been a three month eye opener. It turns out that one of the biggest pests and fire hazards considered locally, Arundo Donax, is a big moneymaker for Monsanto who recommends killing the Giant Reed with Roundup herbicide and other glysophate products. My relentless search, involving hundreds of hours, had led me to a new awareness that many invasive plant species, including Arundo Donax, have more than 102 possible beneficial qualities, including use as medicine, food, and biomass; not to mention the already known uses building structures naturally, and for the making of musical reeds, remediation efforts to help remove toxins from waters. Arundo Donax does not just grow with no purpose. It grows where it is needed to help uplift our perceptions and to balance out land that many times needs help. I have more than 30 blogs on Arundo Donax.

HOW TO MAKE A KILLING ON ARUNDO
http://plantyourdream.net/?p=7615

REVISING OUR IDEAS OF INVASIVE SPECIES
Invasives are here to help us…What are they wanting to teach us?
“…herbicide manufactures and “life patent” corporations have funded tremendous propaganda in recent years hyping a spurious “invasive species” threat to natural ecosystems in order to sell more herbicides. The USDA, when faced with large budget cuts in the mid 1990s, and needing new justification for its regulatory bureaucracy (protecting the nation from “foreign invaders”), joined in this propaganda effort.

GMO AND LABEL GMOs ADVOCACY

I had been writing about GMO’s and the threat of Roundup Ready technology for a number of years here on the Plant Your Dream blog, Then suddenly, the threat of Roundup Herbicide being sprayed on our nearby rim of the Arosa Canyon became a palpable threat. This ordeal is not over. Making friends with neighbors has been my desire. Manning an education campaign has been my goal. This has been step by step. Over the years, we never thought about planting organic foods on the Arosa Canyon Rim. Only now, with the costs of cutting down the Overgrowth, did this become an issue.

VACANCIES AT HOME
At the same time, we had three vacancies to fill, and other room to secure. Some left motivated by the threat of loss of our canyon gardens. This has not been an easy job. There has been much stress involved.

Come Spring 2012, I have three new housemates of great passion in their own lives, some who will help our land in new ways.
We are now in 2012. Only Sustainable Living will thrive as we leave the world behind as we knew it.

TODAY MY MIND TURNS BACK TO THE FUTURE

Committing Random Acts of Kindness and Senseless Acts of Beauty was on my mind throughout my East Coast Tour. This photo was taken right before leaving the Baltimore Hilton. Ralph Bronner, son of Dr. Emanuel Bronner, gave me this bumpber sticker that is now on the EG Mobile. I carried it with me through my journey of seven or more states. Ralph was still recovering at the time. We talked before my trip. I felt the Dr. Bronner energy with me on my trip. I knew his father. David, the president of Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soap, is a big inspiration to me and Dr. Bronner Family has helped my work.

GIVING BLESSINGS TO ADAM EIDINGER FOR THE RIGHT2KNOW MARCH

This was one of the last things I did in Baltimore. The Right2Know March was taking off from New York to Washington D.C. I had the opportunity to visit those states right before the tour and set a tone in my spirit for its success. This is a photo of Adam Eidinger who was instrumental in helping organize the march. I saw in the office of the Natural Product Expo East minutes before I left town.

TURNING AGAIN TO THE FUTURE

Today, my mind turns back to the future I was imagining when I was on an East Coast Tour September 15-25, 2011. During that time, I had the fortunate blessing of speaking before the USDA on Organic Listening Day, September 20. This was the fulfillment of a dream. The following night, at the Organic Trade Association festivities, Mark Lipson, an award winner and the organizer of the Organic Listening Day the day before, singled me out for at USDA headquarters. This was an amazing moment and was recorded in video by Feng Shui with Lurrae, my assistant. This was also a bonding time with members of the Organic Trade Association and allies at the Natural Product Expo East; and yet, with so much on my plate in the months following, I did not have the time to secure these relationships.

OUR STRANGE ECONOMIC STANCE

We are in a strange predicament heading into 2012. Much of the economy we have now is supported by industries that are harmful. Our government is banking BIoTech Technology, GMO Technology and pharmaceutical companies to save us. Here on the Plant Your Dream Blog, I see moreso a need for a return to Nature’s Original Technology and each of us being an Organic Uprising!

THE YEAR SO FAR 2012

HONEYFEST 2012

This early year of 2012, I was one of San Diego Sustainability Advocates who said goodbye to two of our finest members, Amy Lint and Malaki Obado Ogendi. This couple were off to Kenya to do what they can to ensure the future of indigenous wisdom in the face of GMO threat to seeds in their own backyard in Bondo Kenya. While in San Diego the couple left a legacy, with Amy helping ground the IRC Garden made famous by Michelle Obama, and Malaki getting an Aquaponics Center off the ground in nearby City Heights.

This is all told in Plant Your Dream blogs about the Honeyfest 2012.

YESTERDAY WAS A PRIVOTAL DAY FOR URBAN AGRICULTURE

Yesterday, January 31, 2012 was a pivotal day in agriculture in San Diego. Our CIty Council gave unanimous approval to pigmy goats, bees, and chickens feeling more at home in our city within the regulatory framework. This will be a new day for us, and for our community that lives on 1/3 acre.

I still have work to do with my neighbors. I still have work to do at home with housmates; I am the manager here. I feel I am owing time to the many products and sponsors who have helped given me voice.
