ON SEPTEMBER 20, THE USDA HELD AN ORGANIC LISTENING SESSION.
I WAS THERE.
Mark Lipson, Organic & Sustainable Agriculture Policy Advisor, did a great job organizing the day.
There is an organic section within the USDA addressing the needs of Organic Trade and the Organic Community.
Mark will soon post the comments received.
Mark can be reached at:

You can keep in touch with the new Food Farm Freedom Coalition here on Facebook. The People’s Garden, established by Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, on President Lincoln’s birthday, February 9, 2009, was intended to be organically grown using no pesticides or fertilizers. That is why I call it the People’s “Organic” Garden Initiative. I am calling for all college, high school, and elementary schools to have a People’s Organic Garden.
REMARKS BY AGRICULTURE SECRETARY TOM VILSACK “THE PEOPLES GARDEN” AT USDA HONORING LINCOLN’S 200TH BIRTHDAY “ASPHALT BREAKING”
February 12, 2009
Welcome to everyone.
As the Nation celebrates the 200th birthday of President Abraham Lincoln, we have the privilege of standing here-working here-at the Department he created in 1862.
Two-and-a-half years after Lincoln established USDA, in what was to be his last annual message to Congress, he said:
“The Agricultural Department … is precisely the people’s Department, in which they feel more directly concerned than in any other.”
In that spirit, I’m very pleased to announce that we’re establishing a new garden-called “The People’s Garden”-at USDA in honor of President Lincoln.
“The People’s Garden” represents the many ways we can carry our mandate forward for the people of this century.
If President Lincoln were here today, he would take great pride in his Department and its role in providing a sustainable, safe, and nutritious food supply, and-even more importantly-to protect and preserve the landscape on which that food depends.
This garden will add 612 square feet of planted space to an existing garden traditionally planted to ornamentals, bringing the total size to more than 2,500 square feet.
“The People’s Garden” represents forward-thinking ideas and actions.
We’ll grow a large assortment of fruits and vegetables, symbolizing USDA’s commitment to promote healthful diets and fight childhood obesity.
We’ll demonstrate for landowners the kind of conservation practices our farmers use each and every day.
The garden will be tended by our local contractor “Melwood,” and by volunteer USDA employees on their own time.
It will be sustainable. As part of our research program, we’re composting waste from our own cafeterias and recycling it back for use in the garden.
The garden will serve our community. We’ll donate produce grown here to local food banks.
And it will be organic-not using any fertilizers or pesticides.”
WHY ARE ONE MILLION NEW PEOPLE ORGANIC GARDEN’S NEEDED?
Secretary of Ag Tom Villsack needs the support of every school age youth, and our President needs the support of every school age youth, and every Organic Lover to show that the Sustainability Movement has now reached a Tipping Point. The desire for locally grown organic foods will soon become a dominant trend in American Agriculture. This trend begins as we reclaim ourselves as a nation of organic gardeners. The RX for a renewed America the Beautiful is the return of “Amber waves of grain,” organically grown, and millions of homes growing a bit of their own food, one organic head of beet greens at a time, surrounded by Organic Alfalfa Seeds. growing in BioSmart Packaging compostable containers. Some of these alfalfa seedlings can be eaten, and others planted in the ground.
JOIN BEET KEEPERS, RETURN!
The issue of growing more gardens and learning to grow some of our own food is essential.
The time for the return to the Beat of Nature is now!
My eleven day East Coast Tour of organic farms, the Guilford Fair in Connecticut, the USDA People’s Garden in Washington D.C., and forthcoming videos and photo galleries are sponsored by members of the Enchanted Garden Club’s Beet Keepers. Join us now, as we together on the Plant Your Dream Blog help restore the beat of nature in America today.
Act Now for them! We have reached the time of the Organic Summit. Move Organic Forward!
Now is the time for each of us being an Organic Uprising! Standing up for Nature’s Original Technology!
LESLIE REACHES OUT TO YOUTH TO GARDEN
The People’s Garden Initiative is now giving away thousands of pounds of food to those who need it. There are USDA inspired Organic People’s Gardens all over the world at USDA outposts and in many US cities. September 20 in Washington D.C. at USDA, I said I would outreach to all college, high school, and elementary youth asking them to support the People’s Garden Initiative to grow some of their own food. In my talk I also introduced Keep The Beet Media Star, The World’s First Talking Beet Plant. She is the cheerleader for my addition to the national and international initiative. Keep The Beet seZ: Some people right now want to spend their valuable time complaining about the problems we have. Let’s face it. Our economy is broken. A Shift has happened. Be part of the solution. Much of my activity is directed by the beat of nature. This is personified for me in the character of Keep The Beet Media Star, The World’s First Talking Beet Plant. Keep The Beet is a cartoon character heading for Hollywood. She began her Media outreach in 2008 at Hollywood Goes Green and was first quoted by Paige Donner in the Huffington grabbing top billing in that article over the Gov of California.

Sharon C, Artis of the USDA Special Police is my new friend at headquarters on Independence Street where I am volunteering to be the new Enchanted Gardener for the National People’s Garden Initiiative. The announcement came in my Five Minute Pep Talk on the Theme Of Moving Organic Forward giving September 20, 2011 at The US Department of Agriculture headquarters as part of the Organic Listening Session. I promised to send Sharon Organic Seeds. The People’s Garden initiative is an exciting project of the USDA launched by Sec of Ag Tom Villsack in on Lincoln’s Birthday 2009.
HIGHLIGHTS OF MY ORAL COMMENTS
SEPTEMBER 20 ARE IN THIS “PRESS RELEASE” ORIGINALLY WRITTEN BEFORE I SPOKE
In a rousing and stirring five minute pep talk delivered September 20, 2011 as part of the Organic Listening Session, Leslie Goldman, AKA Your Enchanted Gardener announced his willingness to be the Enchanted Gardener for the exciting USDA People’s Garden Initiative. In his passionate announcement, Leslie thanked Sec of Ag Tom Villsack, and the Organic Working Group of the USDA for outstanding work, and praised the secretary for the amazing People’s Garden Initiative thathas inspired gardens at many USDA outposts around the US and World.
Leslie talk was all about Moving Organic Forward, and he dedicated his words to the kids who he said he knew would grow up in a world that would be whole, pure, and organic thanks to the USDA initiatives that go hand in hand with First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move project.
Leslie brought organic alfalfa seeds with him to be planted at USDA headquarters that he said would could become priceless and faced a bleak future, until that historic day–September 20– that inspired a nation of gardeners to grow some of their own food and support our remaining local organic farmers.
Leslie introduced a Silver Box that he said contained the Deepest Seed Dreams of Humanity.
He said that the past, and future of humanity would be organic. He said everything was going to turn out O.K.
COMMENT TOWARD MONSANTO CORP
WAS ALSO IN HIS ORAL PEP TALK
Dr. Robert Fraley and Tami Craig Shilling of Monsanto with Leslie. Leslie planted organic beet seeds a few years back with Dr. Fraley, the father of Round Up Ready at the AAAS Conference in San Diego in 2010. The intent of this Seed Dream was to ease tension between Organic and GMO Lovers. Leslie said that the solution was to have an honest, and authentic Dialogue on Science, Ethics, and Food. Leslie saw this being part of a national-wide education program supported by the USDA Organic Standards Board and other parts of the USDA that favors Biotech Ag and at times a philosophy that believes Organic, Conventional, and Biotech Ag can co-exist.
Leslie honored Dr. Robert Fraley, the father of Round Up Ready and said that Monsanto had given the world a good try to solve our agricultural dilemma with Biotech Ag approaches, however, looking ahead he saw Round Up Ready being a failed attempt that would be outlawed as a health hazard. He welcomed Monsanto Corp to join the ranks of our Organic future and dedicated= funds to support a new wave or local organic farmers and sustainable methods that were time tested based on more than 8000 years of organic wisdom.
THE KEY TO A SOUND ECONOMY
Leslie believes that the key to a sound economy is investing in the Bank of Compost, and that we would continue to be in a Food Emergency until we once again practiced the principals of Soil building. Leslie believes we are now suffering from a lack of micro-nutrients because soils are depleted soils.
On his East Coast Tour, Leslie met with two outstanding New England Farmers who both
are outstanding Soil builders. Videos of that
work will appear in forthcoming Lessons from his
East Coast Tour that will be sponsored by his
Organic Industry Stakeholder friends.
SIGNS OF OUR FOOD EMERGENCY
Sign of the Time. Most Kids no longer know how to eat, and we are just beginning to help now to begin to improve school lunch programs.
PEOPLE’S GARDEN’S IN EVERY SCHOOL
Leslie sees a need for People’s Garden’s in every school, holding to the organic values set by Sec of Ag Tom Villsack, and supported by First Lady Michelle Obama. Kids needed to be taught the values of eating whole, pure, fresh organic food. He spoke in his oral message about how he owed great thanks to conventional 21st Century Medicine, but that it was the application of Organic Wisdom and garden principles that had
improved his life, bringing him out of crippling arthritis.
VIDEOS TO BE MADE AS PART OF THIS
Leslie travels prior to speaking in Washington D.C. included meeting with National Guard recruiters at the Guilford Country Fair in Connecticut. Leslie said that the future of the National Guard would be to defend the Organic standard. He saw millions and millions of returner veterans entering organic farming with support from USDA funds.
Leslie uinderscored that we were in a Food Emergency because most people did not know how to eat, and that this would be solved through each of us being an Organic Uprising, Standing Up for Nature’s Original Technology.
Labeling of GMO ingredients and education about How to Eat are part of his program he will recommend to the USDA. This will begin with teaching about growing food and herbs in People’s Organic Gardens.
LESLIE WANTS TO INSPIRE HIGH SCHOOL KIDS TO CHALLENGE NEARBY SCHOOLS
TO SEE WHO CAN GROW MORE FOOD!
Youth will receive prizes from Organic Food Beet Keeper Sponsors!!!!!
Kids everywhere needed to be encouraged to garden. Fairfax High School Cheerleaders, Spring 2011 at CBS Television City Hollywood.
The Students of Hami High were an example of a school getting behind growing an organic garden. This was a dirt patch less than three years ago. Kids love to garden because they care about having a healthy life ahead of them. More and more want healthy organic food, if given have a chance to taste it. If we want to subsidize any kind of food, it should be organic food for kids.
Leslie picked herbs from the People’s Organic Garden following his talk. Leslie said that he would begin to teach classes to all who wanted to learn about the wonderful ways that we could stabilize through the Shift that had already happened.
Local, organic farming, was now the trend, he said, He thanked the USDA Organic Listening
Day for hearing his message of hope and good will.
He ended with these words from his favorite stanzas of American The Beautiful, the song
was written by Katherine Lee Bates in 1910.
The song begins
Oh Beautiful for spacious skies
for amber waves of grain.
The later verses go:
May thy Gold Refine.
Till all success be nobeleness
and every gain divine!
O Beautiful for patriot dream
That ses beyond the years,
Thine Alabaster cities gleam,
Undimmed by human tears!
How will that be achieved?
said, Leslie By Moving Organic Forward.
THE NATIONAL GUARD COULD BE TRAINED TO HELP OUR KIDS DEFEND THEIR HEALTH. ORGANIC FOOD, LOCAL AND ORGANIC IS THE KEY TO ENDING OUR FOOD EMERGENCY
“The new generation has inherited depleted soil. The most serious problem confronting the coming generations is this nearly insurmountable handicap of depletion of the quality of the foods because of the depletion of the minerals of the soil.”
Weston A Price said in 1945
In Nutriton and Physical Degeneration
Leslie with the National Guard at the Guilford Country Fair September 17, 2011. Leslie said that a good job in these Shifting times would be for the National Guard to support local organic Farming. He said that millions of returning veterans could help end our food emergency through going into farming.
DEDICATE: S0 STATES X $10 MILLION EACH FOR LOCAL ORGANIC SMALL FARM RECOVERY TO RECLAIM OUR NATION’S EARTH-BASED HOMELAND SECURITY
Dedicated Farm Zones in Perpetuity are part of the new package that will be approved out of former military spending when no longer needed.
Special Grants to save small family farms.
To preserve our remaining local, family farmers before they become endangered species.
Leslie pointed the example of Hami High School in Los Angeles as a model Garden that went from dirt to crops in less than two years through organic methods.
Leslie said that massive funds needed to be put toward the People’s Garden Initiative to help en our Food Emergency through true Earth Based Homeland Securtiy. Everything we needed to know about
shifting to a healthier economy could be found in the principles of each of us becoming an Organic Uprising, Each of us Standing Up for Nature’s Original Technology.
Start with growing a beet in a pot to get your beat back with Nature.
Buy an oranic Beet from a local organic farmer.
INVESTING IN LOCAL FARMING FARMS IS VITAL AND NECESSARY
Leslie Visited Barberry Hill Organic Farm in Guilford. The soil had been build up for more than 25 years. Many local organic farmers are struggling to hold on to the land and need support. This is an issue of great need. Make sure our remaining family farms get the help they need through education that
favors organic farming.

MORE ABOUT THE PEOPLE’S GARDEN
PROGRAMS AT USDA IN WASHINGTON
The People’s Garden’ initiative is an effort by USDA which challenges its employees to establish gardens at USDA facilities worldwide or help communities create gardens. A ‘People’s Garden’ can vary in size and type, but all have a common purpose – to help the community they are within and the environment.
A ‘People’s Garden’ must include the following three components:
1. Benefit your community: Gardens benefit communities in many different ways. They can create spaces for leisure or recreation that the public can use, provide a harvest to a local food bank or shelter, be a wildlife friendly landscape or be a rain garden to absorb storm water run-off and protect the soil from erosion.
2. Be collaborative: The garden must be a collaborative effort between other volunteers, neighbors or organizations within your community. Local partnerships could carry out the mission of a People’s Garden.
3. Incorporate sustainable practices: the garden should include gardening practices that nurture, maintain and protect the environment such as:
Capturing rainwater in rain barrels
Composting and mulching
Planting native species
Encouraging beneficial insects that feed on destructive pests
To date, more than 300 gardens have been designated as ‘The People’s Garden’ across the country.
More information about ‘The People’s Garden’ initiative can be found at www.usda.gov/peoplesgarden or follow the initiative for real-time updates at twitter.com/peoplesgarden.
