On the Pulse of Organic: Local and National Review
ON THE PULSE LOCALLY IN SAN DIEGO,
ONE OF THE NATION’S LEAD ORGANIC SUSTAINABILITY CITIES
Left my post yesterday at the Sunday Hillcrest Farmers’ Market to do some community outreach at JB Productions–Jon Block’s fabulous Here and Now event at the Lafayette Hotel, located in the same neighborhood. The Hillcrest Farmers’ Market is a healing experience for me, a time each week of giving and receiving, and checking in with some of my favorite community of farmers and shoppers. If shopping the Farmers’ Market is not on your weekly agenda, you are missing a great adventure! Be sure to frequent your local farmers’ market, and shop for your neighbors. How else are we going to support the USDA and their Know Your Farmer. Know Your Food Program…
We had a ball getting intimate with various foods and fragrances from the Hillcrest Farmers’ Market.

Chef Jem, creator of Raw Milk, The Whole Truth and housemate, alerted me to the showing of Farmegeddon, a very important film about the intrusion of the FDA and other government agencies in our lives. This is a must see film. I went to see the film at the La Paloma Theatre, 7 pm, Tuesday, June 28, 2011. We need to support Kristin Canby, the director in getting the word out about this important film. She brought the film out in Washington within the last month, and is doing showing around the country. Please update with her on the Farmageddon The Movie site on Facebook. Her film will eventually be out on DVD. We need to make strategies for our individual cities, so that Farmegeddon does not take place where we live.

SAN DIEGO SUSTAINABILTY
San Diego is a city that can feed our own people nicely, if all our local organic farmers are supported and each person is encouraged to grow a bit of our own food. I introduce some of the most loving food growers you will ever want to meet through our Agriculture posts..
Too much food goes unsold at the Hillcrest and North Park Farmers’ Market, the Thursday Farmers’ Market I support. I am asking everyone to bring neighbors or shop for your neighbors. We need more CSA members supporting the three CSA’s I have on my radar. These Community Supported Agriculture programs include those at JR Organics, Suzie’s Farm, and Sage Mountain Inland Empire CSA.. Each grows therapeutic quality food, the kind that Michelle Obama grows in the White House garden. Wherever you live, find local farmers to support. This is the key to a true healthy economy based on True Earth based Homeland Security.

Organic Center Dinner
March 11, 2011
On the Pulse of the national scale, I am looking this morning at what strategy we need to get GMO Labeling done, and GMO’s out of our food supply. Gary Hirshberg, Ce-Yo of Stonyfield Farm is asking some of the Organic Stakeholders to contribute to the Obama Campaign, $2500.00 a person, while Anthony Zolezzi of the Zcause Blog in a post called Building a Bridge to Monsanto Before We Take Our Case Against GMOS to Obama says we ought to meet with Monsanto first in Saint Louis.
The Obama ear is clearly in the camp of Biotech and Biotech Ag. At the recent historic Cultivating Food Justice event in San Diego, April 9-10, I called for a Speak Out where grassroots and national sponsors could deliver messages on a FB Note to the President and his First Lady.
Michael Pollen, in exciting talks a few years back, informs us that the President turned to his wife, Michelle, and said, “Show me the Movement!” He was saying that if we wanted his support, we would have to prove that we as a grass roots movement were strong enough to warrant his attention in light of the forces that are already at play in his head.

ON PRESIDENT OBAMA SAYING
“SHOW ME THE MOVEMENT!”
The Biotech industry and its roots into the Codex Alimentarius Commission has a tremendous gameplan for how they see the Future of Food. One of their main allies in this Rock Your Soul Opera is Michael R. Taylor, our current food czar, who has gifted us significantly in the last 20 years both with hormones added to milk and had his finger in the pie of non-labeling of GMO foods. For More on some of the research I have done on Michael R. Taylor go here. Here is a great article about Michael R. Taylor who I consider one of the most influencial men of the 21st Century. Michael R. Taylor is one of the stars featured in The World According to Monsanto. Here is must viewing ten minute excerpt for anyone who wants to be informed about the Revolving door between Michael R. Taylor, the FDA, and his work with Monsanto.
THE FUTURE OF FOOD:
WHICH ARE YOU VOTING FOR
THROUGH YOUR SUPPORT OR LACK
OF SUPPORT OF THE ORGANIC MOVEMENT?
The Codex Alimentarius Commission, the international commission that exists under the auspices of the U.N., and has an office under the USDA, makes up many food rules that trickle down in US Government and world policy. The cornerstone of these agreements is trade. The Codex sees us, the consumer, using big pharma and GE Ag as the primary approach to health. We see the The Future of Food a different way in the sustainability movement. The Biotech Industry and Monsanto Corp have the bucks. Their money and influence speaks loudly among our elected reps who are floundering with a US economy that knows little about the true source of our wealth, the Bank of Compost, and learning about Nature’s Original Technology. What we have is our numbers and our dreams, if we all worked together. That is the glitch. I see a Tipping point possible, if we all work together, from grassroots to beet tops, but we are not doing this. Our divisiveness has been pointed out by Gary Hirshberg in an outstanding post on the Huffington Post, Speaking With One Voice to Stop Monsanto and Biotech.
At the March 11, 2011 session on GMO Political Challenge and Beyond at the Natural Product Expo West, Walt Robb, co-ceo of Whole Foods Market, expressed a powerful call to action for the Organic Movement. On the panel were numbers of the Organic Stakeholders who were in Washington at the December meeting with the USDA that was looking at the Organic Alfalfa issue. The transcript clearly shows Sec of Ag Tom Villsack
aware that organic needed had a place in American Ag. The USDA, at the directive of our President, went the way of full deregulation of Alfalfa. Food Democracy Now’s Dave Murphy indicates that Sec Villsack may have been informed of possible and potential health hazards in the use of Round Up Ready herbicide a few weeks before the president made the call to deregulate alfalfa.
WHEN DID THE “WAR” AGAINST ORGANIC
At the March 11, 2011 session, George Seimon, founder of Organic Valley, and one of the Organic Stakeholders at the USDA meeting in Washington, described the state of Organic vs. our Oppositions, presumably the Biotech industry. He said we were in a war climate. The room was filled with professional recorders. I was recording with my Olympus SP-600UZ. I cannot believe I am the only one who put out footage so far of this incredible historic call to action and being of one voice. You can see a bit of that footage here called Organic Stakeholders Launch Organic Uprising.
If there is anyone who questions the motives or heatspace of the Organic Stakeholders, or where the Organic Trade Association stands, they need to see this footage. Christine Bushway, executive director of the OTA was among those speaking during that panel. Clearly the Organic Stakeholders and OTA are rooting deeply for the elimination of GMO proliferation.
JUST EAT ORGANIC
SAYS GARY HIRSHBERG
IN THIS DELIGHFUL RAP
THE CONTROLLED OPPOSITION HOLDING BACK THE TIPPING POINT
MAY HAVE BEEN BORN IN THE GMO POLITICAL CHALLENGE SESSION
AT THE NATURAL PRODUCT EXPO WEST
I have it from my sources, that it was at that very meeting, on the same day of the earthquake in japan, March 11, 2011 that some people in that room at the GMO Political Challenge Panel decided to go after the Organic Trade Association (OTA). Two months later, we had the Organic Spies Find Lies campaign launched on the internet. This campaign has been picked up by the Organic Consumer Association (OCA) and many others who want a Tipping Point in favor of GE Labeling. Basically, as I see it, many pro labeling of GE enthusiasts are missing the mark and shooting ourselves in the butt when we break ranks and attempt to take down each other rather than as a united front, taking our case to others in the grassroots as well as opening communications with Monsanto and the President.
As a group in support of the return of the organic movement, a technology that has always been here, we need to be educating those who do not know about GMO’s. Not only do we need to say No to GMO; we need to say Yes to Nature’s Original Technology. Clearly Organic Food is intended to feed the world. Steps are needed everywhere to build up the soil to supply the missing micronutrients that each person needs to regain our beat with nature.

JOIN IN ON A DIALOGUE ON SCIENCE, ETHICS, AND FOOD
I ask you all to join In on a true Dialogue on Science, Ethics, and Food on Facebook.
With facts and honest ethics put on the table, the organic point of view will win out over the Big Ag and and GE Ag approach. I am willing to be convinced by true and honest thinking that I am incorrect. There are many real good people in the Biotech Industry. There are many good people who work for Monsanto Corporation. I have met them, and yet, I say, there is truly no other agriculture that goes hand in hand with sustainable living on the earth other than Nature’s Original Technology. Each of us are asked to again become an Organic Uprising. We are each being asked to grow some of our own food. Begin with growing an organic beet in a pot and a cupful of organic alfalfa seedlings. Turn your beat around with nature.
ORGANIC SPIES FIND LIES
AND DAVID MASTIO’S DEAD BODIES DEMAND ORGANIC FOOD MORATORIUM
So what is going on here?
FIrst Organic Spies Find Lies comes out around May 31 and demeans two of my favorite organic advocates, Julia Sabin and Kelly Shea, board members of the Organic Trade Association. The documentary then goes out to question why the OTA, whose mission statement is upholding Organic standards. The documentary assumes a conflict of interest on the part of Julia and Kelly. It names others; I do not know them, so I cannot defend them. The documentary accuses the OTA and its board of slowing down the labeling of GMO’s. This argument is filled with holes.
ON THE PHONE WITH JULIA SABIN
KELLY SHEA AND OTA
I spent about 25 minutes on the phone with Julia Sabin of RW Knudsen a few weeks ago. Julia is a good hearted community person always out to raise her hand to volunteer. Her life is about taking positive actions and gratitude for opportunities to uplift others. Her priorities include being good mom, wife, and a devoted daughter of an aging mother (who has done a lot of international assistance work in Africa). Add to this full life being president of the OTA board, and a VP for J.M. Smuckers. Smuckers owns two of the organic companies she midwifes, RW Knudsen’s and Santa Cruz Organics. That’s just the way it is, right now in the organic industry. Larger companies who are not organic own the smaller organic companies. This is not to say the smaller organic companies are not true to their missions and goals.
WHAT IS OUR STRATEGY?
If we as a movement want it any different than what we have now, then we have to get our act together, and make sure we invest our time, energy, and resources building one solid organic industry. I consider it a waste of our time and energy as a movement looking for conflict of interest arguments where they do not exist and finding fault with Organic Stakeholders using business savvy to lift the organic banner.
IS A TOP LEVEL ORGANIC ADVOCATE
Kelly Shea, VP of Horizon Organics; and Silk.
Silk was recently added to the Non GMO shopping Guide
with Jeffrey Smith of the Institute of Responsible Technology.
Shea is a cheerleader for Jeffrey Smith.
After taking on Julia Sabin, the documentary Organic Spies Find Lies then also goes after Kelly Shea. Kelly and I were drawn together at the Natural Product Expo West because we both admire Jeffrey Smith, author of Seeds of Deception, the international best seller that aims to take down GMO’s. Kelly Shea, through her resources with Horizon Organic and Silk, has been a big supporter of Jeffrey Smith’s work. She is a big time advocate for GMO labeling and getting rid of GMO’s. To imagine that Kelly is a Pro GMO advocate or that the Organic Trade Association is somehow responsible for our sad state of GE labeling is again a silly argument.

Again, if we want the Tipping point, find a way to get it together among ourselves as a movement.
SO WHAT IS UP WITH THIS?
About one week after Organic Spies Find Lies goes after the OTA, and David Mastio comes out with his piece in the Washington TImes, called Dead bodies demand organic food moratorium. This is in reaction to the breakout of virulent e coli in Germany, that are now resistent to most antibiotics. This precipitates stories like Europe Organic Food Scare and video responses on the Wall Street Journal. Please read the comments to this story for a glimpse at the state of organic edu in America. If Monsanto herself, and her international allies, were on top of a campaign to take down the Tipping point, I could do no better than what we are doing to divide and conquer our one Voice speaking out together.
The Truth is, OTA, Julia Sabin, Kelly Shea, and most of us who are in the field right now growing food and learning to grow our own food beter, really don’t have too much time to spend, on all the divisive moves that are being played out. They have their hands full doing their own lives, and upholding organics as best they can. We are each basically doing what we can to figure out to best use our limited and valuable energy to make the Shift that is being asked of each of us now.
In the end, we will have an Organic Uprising! I am banking on sanity and good will winning out.
This is what I see and am seeing today.
